Black, small, and slightly acidic. That's what comes to mind when calling blackcurrant. Not only good for consumption, the fruit of this berry family was able to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and heart failure.
A study conducted at Rambam Medical Center, Israel, showed that blackcurrant fruit has high levels of anti-oxidants. It makes blackcurrant able to reduce the level of bad cholesterol in the blood.
"Finding a large amount of anti-oxidants in the fruit is a small berry that is an interesting thing," said Professor Michael Aviram, head of research, as reported by the Times of India (12/08).
"It will provide a breakthrough in the field of cardiovascular health," he added.
The results of this study have been published by the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Food and Function.
