These researchers involved 36 patients who had heart disease and 36 healthy patients. Patients were taking a pill called Ateronon, which contains 7 milligrams of lycopene (an ingredient in tomatoes) or a placebo every day for two months.

As a result, the respondents were ill, their blood vessels dilated by 53 percent. This is due to the increased function of the endothelium, the layer of cells in the walls of blood vessels.
