Smiles Can Relieve Stress |
If you're happy, usually one easy smile. But if you smile for no reason, whether it also can make you happy? It can, so the researchers say.
"A smile is an indicator of happiness. Additionally, the smile was potent as a panacea from stress and keep us happy," said researcher Tara Kraft from the University of Kansas, as quoted from Live Science (31/07).
In this study, involving 169 Kraft and his team of students from the Middle East. The entire correspondent then asked to perform a neutral expression, sober smile, and smile by using a stick in the mouth. Stick is forced correspondent with wide open mouth without realizing that they actually smile plays.
After that, all the correspondents were given a task that is quite stressful. The task is to soak the hand in ice water. Not only that, they were also asked to trace a star with the non-dominant hand. Even more difficult again, the search was conducted through the reflection of the mirror.
During the experiment, researchers measured heart rate and stress levels of their correspondents. Evidently, the correspondent who smiles less stress than others. Interestingly, the correspondent was forced and did not know if they smile also have a lower heart rate. The research has been published in the journal Psychological Science also proves smile can indeed relieve stress.
"So, if you are stuck in traffic or stress due to something else, try to hold a smile a few moments," one of the team so advice Kraft, Sarah Pressman.
